Abstract

The purpose of this article is to clarify the directions of international transfer of knowledge about football in the cities of Ukrainian lands at the end 19th and at the beginning of 20th centuries, as well as the factors that determined the geography of this process. Thus, it was found that the dissemination of information about football was associated with several socio-economic processes of that time. There is the intensification of trade in the Black Sea basin, the development of industry, and the formation of the education system and the expansion of the network of educational institutions. These factors were typical for the countries of continental Europe. At the same time, an important factor in the process of knowledge transfer was internships in foreign educational institutions and investments in the economy of the Russian Empire by British, Czech, Belgian, German and French entrepreneurs. Six of the ten cities of the Ukrainian lands we considered illustrate the process of transfer of knowledge about football from Great Britain. There are Odesa, Mykolaiv, Mariupol, Lviv, Yuzivka and Kharkiv. Three are from Austria-Hungary. There are Uzhhorod, Chernivtsi and Kyiv. Two are from Belgium. There are Druzhkivka and Kharkiv. One is from Germany and France. There is Druzhkivka.
